Connected Health: Next-Generation Medical Networks
SUSTAINET-guarDian
Sustainable Technologies for Advanced Resilient and Energy-Efficient Networks – guided utilities for automation, resilience, and digital innovation in advanced networks
Secure, resilient and energy-efficient networks for healthcare with AI-supported network monitoring and fault detection; ICCAS is responsible for the medical demonstrator.

SUSTAINET-guarDian addresses the growing dependence of healthcare institutions on reliable digital infrastructure. As clinical IT systems, medical devices, and mobile devices (IoT, wearables) become increasingly networked, system complexity and the risk of failures increase substantially. The project develops secure, resilient, and energy-efficient telecommunications systems, with a particular focus on AI-supported network monitoring, automated fault detection, and demand-driven network orchestration for clinical applications. ICCAS at Leipzig University Medical Center is responsible for the medical demonstrator and for investigating network-side requirements from a clinical perspective.
In the first project year, the clinical use cases for the demonstrator were specified together with experts from hospital IT and medical engineering. The focus is on the reliable transmission of biosignals, high-resolution video streams for telemedical applications, and wireless real-time communication in clinical environments. In parallel, initial requirements for network resilience and security were systematically collected, and first concepts for demand-driven network orchestration were developed.
