Minimally invasive endoscopic surgery is a well-established surgical practice. However, decoupled hand-eye coordination, limited field of view and operating space as well as decreased depth perception are demanding for both surgeon and equipment. Surgeons are required to train their spatial awareness and instrumentation skills, but training quality and effects vary individually, depending on available resources and the predisposition of trainees.

We have developed a training assistance system that captures and records multimodal data from laparoscopic exercises, which can be used to predict training progress. Since 2024, two studies have been conducted in which the training progress of untrained students was analyzed using this technology. Based on the results, evaluation algorithms and model-based assessments were evaluated to record training progress depending on the feedback used. The results of the evaluation are currently being published and will be used for further optimization.
