Klinische Relevanz von MSI und HSI
Basic studies on the clinical relevance of multi- and hyperspectral imaging – industry-sponsored research by KARL STORZ SE & Co. KG
Basic studies on the clinical relevance of multi- and hyperspectral imaging (industry-sponsored research for KARL STORZ SE & Co. KG). In 2025 the first clinical study on nerve identification using laparoscopic HSI was published and an animal study on video-rate perfusion imaging was launched; a patent application was filed and a further patent granted.

Multi- and hyperspectral imaging (MSI and HSI) can support the intraoperative assessment of tissue perfusion, the identification of tissue structures, and the detection of tumor tissue. The aim of this project is to acquire and analyze spectral data using different MSI and HSI systems in clinical and preclinical settings. Potential clinical fields of application and the limitations of the technology will be evaluated. In addition, methods for the automated classification and visualization of tissue based on spectral image data will be developed and implemented.
Laparoscopes for multi- and hyperspectral imaging were evaluated in the laboratory, in an animal model, and in several human studies. The findings obtained are intended to support surgical procedures in the future.
In 2025, key milestones included the publication of the first clinical study on nerve identification using laparoscopic HSI and the launch of an animal study investigating video-rate perfusion imaging. In addition, a patent application was filed (DE102024114647A1), and a further patent was granted (DE102021121025A1).
